The Wellness Tea Review: Everything About this Tea is Beautiful

December 30, 2020 by Joi Leave a Comment

The Wellness Tea Pyramid Tea Bags

The Wellness Tea

One of my newest tea obsessions is from The Wellness Tea, pictured here. Before getting to the benefits, let’s be honest… if a tea doesn’t taste good, the benefits go right down the drain (along with the tea). This tea is spectacular – very, very delicious and enjoyable. I’ll be honest, when I first brewed a cup, I was pretty much expecting it to taste like every other blend that contains chamomile… chamomile! It’s one of those aromas and flavors that dominates. It’s a beautiful herb and has a beautiful flavor – but, by its very nature, it loves to be the center of attention. If you’re familiar with cooking, you’ll recognize that garlic is the same way. They’re like only children… we want to be the center of attention!

So, yes, I expected this tea to essentially be like a cup of chamomile tea. I was very wrong and I’m delighted to have been. They have hit upon the perfect blend to keep chamomile in its place – a delightful member of the team, not the superstar who tries to control the entire game.

If I had to wager a guess, I’d say it’s the cinnamon and ginger combination that help keep chamomile in check. They share the spotlight and the flavor is out of this world.

Health Benefits of The Wellness Tea

If (like me) you’re making health a huge priority in 2021, I know you’ll want to learn more about this tea. If 2020 taught us anything it’s that the healthier we are, the better our odds are of fighting off illnesses and viruses. The stronger our body, the stronger its defenses.

Immunity boosting properties (as well as anti-inflammatory action) is one of the things I love most about this particular tea.  Anyone who isn’t interested, at this point, in boosting their immunity simply isn’t paying attention! I particularly love the thought of being able to do something healthy for myself while doing something I enjoy everyday anyway – drinking hot tea in the evening.

It doesn’t get any simpler or more delicious than that!

The Wellness Tea Pyramid Tea Bags

The Wellness Tea Pyramid Tea Bags

I also love the fact that The Wellness Tea comes in beautiful, ideal pyramid tea bags. Pyramid tea bags, such as this, are basically like having a built in infuser INSIDE your cup. You can see the dry tea leaves and other healthy, organic ingredients, but the pyramid tea bag allows you to steep your tea without having to get an infuser or strainer out.

I’ve gotten to where I love simplicity almost as much as I do tea.

Tips for Kicking the Sweet Tea Habit FOR GOOD!

February 4, 2020 by Joi Leave a Comment

Blueberry Tea from Adagio Teas

Blueberry Tea from Adagio Teas

I have battled an obsession with sweet tea for my entire life. The funny thing is, I don’t actually have that big of a sweet tooth.  I love desserts as much as the next person, but I don’t HAVE to have them and never crave sweet things. My cravings are always for things like fried catfish, mashed potatoes, bacon, pizza… things like that.

Yet.. when it comes to tea, sweet tea has been as big a part of my life as cats, baseball, and old movies.

Over the years I have tried and failed miserably to switch from sweet tea to unsweet tea. Doing so saves calories (which can then go toward the foods mentioned above!) and cuts out sugar which has been proven to be worse for us in more ways than just our waistline.

I’ve made “Drink Unsweetened Tea” a New Year’s Resolution countless times – literally countless, I wouldn’t even know where to begin counting. And, obviously, since I keep making the resolution, it has never stuck. A while back, I thought I had found the answer – I believe I even blogged about it here or on my self help blog. I thought I had the game won, but (unfortunately) I was still in the game – and woefully behind.

I did, however, realize where I made my mistake – and, this time around, it has helped me to beat the obsession for good. How do I know it’s “for good” this time? A few reasons:

  1. Because I have hit the “magic turning point” where I actually prefer unsweet tea to sweet tea. I never thought I’d get here, but I made it!
  2. Because, even when it’s just me (without another soul to witness it), I choose unsweet each and every time. Why? It’s simply better to me, now.

If you have an addiction or obsession with sweet tea, please keep reading, I know you can get there too. TRUST ME, if I can do it, anyone can. It had a complete and total hold on me for over 20 years.

The tips for giving up sweet tea that worked for me are below – including the last one, which is where I slipped up before. Pay careful attention to this one!

Tips For Giving Up Sweet Tea

  1. Adding frozen fruit to your tea is a fun and tasty way to make it more interesting to you.
  2. Experimenting with different flavors of tea – in addition to black and green – is an exciting way to experience great flavors. When you combine flavored tea combinations with black tea AND frozen fruit – you open up a whole wide and wonderful world of tea flavors! My personal favorite is raspberry flavored tea and peach flavored tea, combined with black tea – with frozen peaches added to each glass. I also love orange and blueberry teas a great, great deal.  Simply brew your chosen combinations together and you’re set. Just do not add sugar! The fruity flavors keep your taste buds and your brain entertained and you don’t even miss the sugar. You can find flavored teas in the supermarket, and there are glorious options online – from websites like Adagio. They have many, many flavors of tea and they are all excellent.
  3. Why do I combine flavored tea with black tea? For the caffeine! I love the perk I get from caffeine and a lot of flavored tea or herbal teas are caffeine free.
  4. I’ve found that brewing your tea a little stronger  than normal also helps. You taste more of the deliciousness from the tea leaves and this flavor is what will, one day, seal the deal for you. You will come to realize that the sugar has deadened a lot of that great tea flavor.
  5. Okay, this one will sound a little like something a Disney cartoon would say BUT there’s a lot of truth to it. Watch your words. That’s the tip. When we keep telling ourselves we are missing “sweet tea” and are drinking “unsweet tea,” the wording, alone, comes up short! I mean, if I were a glass of tea, I’d rather be named sweet than unsweet! With my flavored drinks, I’m able to say I’m drinking “Raspberry Peach Tea” or “Citrus Green Tea…” or any other concoction I’ve brewed at the time. However, when I’m simply enjoying fresh black tea or fresh green tea, I make a point of referring to them just like that… “fresh tea.” Sounds silly, I know. I admit it readily! However, I also readily admit that this has gone into the mix of things that finally “clicked” for me. When my husband and I are eating out at a favorite restaurant, I used to fill our drinks this way: Sweet tea for me, and Unsweet tea for him. Now I fill them up with Fresh tea for both of us.
  6. This tip, and the one that follows are where I have messed up: Common sense tells you that “allowing yourself a cheat day” will be helpful. That wasn’t the case, at all, for me. Many times over the years, I told myself, “Okay, one day a week you can have sweet tea,” but all the cheat day did was make me want MORE. When your brain registers that you “get to have what’s best” one day a week, it isn’t long before it says, “Nah… I want the good stuff every day of the week!” All the cheat day does is reinforce what you are missing out on – and, until you hit that magical turn in the road (and realize that tea actually does taste better without sugar), having a cheat day is a sure-fire way to set yourself up for failure.
  7. Finally, this is another “common sense” tip that proved disastrous for me: The approach many people make is to simply cut back on the sugar at first. They’ll add less sugar than normal, then after a while, add even less than that – weaning themselves off of it entirely. Did NOT work for me. It wasn’t long before I stopped  paying attention to how much I was or was not adding. For a while, in restaurants, I’d fill my cup up halfway with sweet and halfway with unsweet – but I was still masking the superior taste of unsweet tea and I was still feeding the sugar addiction. Common sense says that this approach is golden, but for most people it simply isn’t. It’s honestly best to simply walk away from sweet tea and never look back.

If you’re battling the sweet tea addiction, you have all of my sympathy – I know how hard of a habit it is to kick. But you also have all of my support and all of my confidence that you will make it. Again, if I did, anyone can!

Trust me… it won’t be long before you much, much, much prefer Fresh tea to Sweet tea.

The Republic of Tea: Organic SuperHerb Teas For Women

March 23, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

The Republic of Tea Organic Raspberry Leaf SuperHerb Tea For Women's Health

Organic Raspberry Leaf SuperHerb Tea for Women

The Republic of Tea  is one of the most trusted names in the world of tea and has been on my radar for many years. I remember the first one of their teas I tried – a green tea that caught my eye in a Joe Mugg’s shop. I initially fell in love with their beautiful canisters (I am ALL about packaging, if you haven’t noticed by now), then when I began buying their teas, I fell even further in love because they’re extraordinary.

The Republic of Tea has just released a new line of organic SuperHerb Teas for women this month.  THese organic teas are unique blends of powerful herbs with complementing fruits and spices that have a wide range of health benefits for women through all phases of life.

I spend a great deal (make that GREAT DEAL) of time reading about healing foods, drinks, and herbs for two of my other blogs, Self Help Daily and Out of Bounds. If we’re being honest, however, most of the reading and research I do is out of love for my family (husband, three daughters, and three sons-I-never had). I want them to all be as healthy as possible. So I know all too well that we have more control of our health and physical well-being than most people realize.

Every single time we decide what we’re going to put into our bodies, we are exercising this control!

The Republic of Tea Organic Raspberry Leaf SuperHerb Tea For Women's Health

Not only does each bite and each sip carry us either closer to or further away from optimum health, but what we put into our bodies can actually help with common ailments and/or health concerns such as…

  • anxiety
  • weight
  • bloating
  • joint pain
  • hot flashes
  • inflammation
  • etc..

The Republic of Tea has 4 exciting new tea blends that can help us women in various stages of life. Keep reading to see which one (or 2, 3, or 4!) sound the most intriguing to you.

The 4 new organic tea blends just released from The Republic of Tea:

1. Fenugreek for Nursing Moms

Fenugreek is nature’s most popular herb for supporting healthy breast milk production. A smooth blend with a hint of organic cinnamon, this caffeine-free tea offers a soothing and delicious moment of relaxation.

2. Sage for Calm & Hot Flashes

Sage is an ancient herb known to help keep the body cool and calm, even in the midst of menopausal hormone surges. A refreshing blend with tropical pineapple notes, this caffeine-free tea is especially revitalizing cooled and served over ice.

3. Raspberry Leaf for Women’s Health

Red raspberry leaf has a wide range of health benefits for women, and can help at virtually every stage of life – fertility, pregnancy, nursing and menopause.  This tea is reminiscent of a fruity parfait with a juicy blend of rosehips, vanilla and berry notes.

4. Nettle for Inflammation, Kidney Function & More

Our Nettle tea is for both men and women. Nettle leaves can help reduce inflammation and support kidneys. Organic nettle leaves with a touch of peppermint and vanilla makes this tea a joy to sip.

I was offered a sample of a tea of my choice in exchange for telling my tea blog readers about the wonderful new teas.  Since I am a Raspberry tea fanatic (drinking it all day, everyday qualifies as fanatical, does it not?), I chose the Raspberry Leaf tea.  I also loved that it covered “any stage,” since that’s pretty much where I live.

From The Republic of Tea’s Website: Red Raspberry Leaf is perhaps the most popular herb among midwives and herbalists. From fertility to pregnancy to nursing to even menopause,* this herb can help women at virtually every stage of life.* It has been long revered for its ability to help tone uterine muscles and balance menstrual cycles.* With a hint of vanilla and berry notes, this tea is reminiscent of a fruity parfait.  See more.

Organic Raspberry Leaf SuperHerb Tea Review

When brewing tea for one of my tea reviews, I always try it, first, hot and then iced.  I made a large mug of the Raspberry Leaf to enjoy with my afternoon reading. Tea and an Agatha Christie mystery were made for one another, you know.

The tea was amazing – one of the things I’ve always found lovely about The Republic of Tea is the fact that they are subtle. You never get any overwhelming “in your face” flavors or notes.  The star of each show is the tea, itself, which is exactly as it should be.

After all, if we were after fruit juice, wouldn’t we buy it?!

The perfect cup of tea is one in which you take a sip and know you’re drinking  a great cup of tea. Then, you have the lovely extra flavor or flavors in the background. This is exactly (and consistently) how it is with The Republic of Tea and this tea is no exception.

I finished the cup of tea in the time it took me to read two chapters. There was excellence in each and every sip.

When it came time (at supper) to try it iced, I have to admit, I thought, “It probably won’t be as great as the hot version was…” Not only was I wrong, I was ridiculously wrong… the iced version of this tea is even more delicious and memorable than the hot. You’re able to taste the different (beautiful) flavors in the tea when it’s iced (or even room temp). Unlike traditional tea bags, when making iced tea with The Republic of Tea, you don’t need to use nearly as many bags per pitcher. My favorite way to go about it, however is to simply brew the amount I’ll be using per glass.

I can’t recommend this Raspberry Leaf tea enough – it’s a perfect 10 hot and a perfect 10-1/2 iced!

Ideas for Giving Up Sweet Tea for Unsweet Tea Without Losing Your Mind or Your Will to Live

January 9, 2017 by Joi Leave a Comment

Frozen Peaches in Unsweet Tea
I guess that title is melodramatic enough, wouldn’t you say? But here’s the thing – I am a Southern gal who proudly loves her birthrights:

  • accent
  • “y’all“
  • green tomato relish on beans
  • grits
  • love for college football Saturdays
  • cornbread
  • sweet tea

Unfortunately (or fortunately – jury is still out) I’m also health-conscious, and the more I read about the dangers of sugar, the more inclined I am to completely remove it from my tea – iced and hot.

Ouch.

When your favorite thing to drink all of your life WITH EACH MEAL is sweet tea, giving it up doesn’t come easy. Most days it comes without tears, thrown objects, and sour looks at strangers – but it is not easy.

I’m not trying to totally remove sugar from my life. No, thank you. I’m simply looking at all the places I can cut it out so that my overall consumption is much, much less. For me, not adding any sweetener to my coffee or tea (literally) cuts out a couple of cups of sugar daily.  Yes, daily. Try not to judge.

If you, like me, are trying to cut back on sugar, removing it from your drinks is a brilliant first step. Over the years with trial and error and error and error, I’ve found a few tricks.  I hope they can help you – which, if we’re being honest, I believe they will.  Why? Because if they can help ME, they can help ANYONE.

KNOWLEDGE is POWER

Knowing why you are breaking up with sugar isn’t just enough – you have to keep reminding yourself of the reasons when he tries to sweet-talk his way back into your life. (if you need sugar to be a female, simply switch up the pronouns, I don’t mind).

Dangers of Sugar

  • sugar promotes wrinkling and aging
  • sugar can lead to osteoporosis
  • cavities, rotted teeth..
  • empty calories that give you extra weight without any nutrients
  • it is almost as addictive as drugs
  • can cause cancer
  • contributes to diabetes
  • leads to heart problems
  • can cause gallstones
  • can cause arthritis
  • and many many more…

Diabetes, cancer, heart problems…. Ready to get serious?

{Tips for giving up sweet tea below…}

Berries Teas Sampler from Adagio Teas.

COMMIT

A lot of people say to cut out unsweet tea and only have sweet tea, maybe once a week, as a “treat.”  This did not at all work for me. All it did was remind me of the sweet elixir I was now missing out on. I once actually stopped drinking sweet tea for a good three weeks (a huge landmark for me, as you’d imagine). Then, while dining out, I inadvertently, from YEARS of habit, said “sweet tea.” Sure, I caught it in time to correct myself, but I didn’t go that route.  One sip and I knew I’d just fallen off the wagon and was now firmly underneath it clinging to my sugar laden tea.

The three weeks did not become four weeks.

I’ve learned that if you’re going to give it up… give it up for good.  What you’re actually trying to do is develop a taste for, love for, and appreciation for the taste of unsweet tea. Reminding yourself of it’s overwhelming deliciousness is not going to help you.

IF YOU, TOO, ARE A SUGAR JUNKIE….

Because of the ridiculous amount of sugar I used in my tea, I actually had a preliminary process before I completely gave it up for good. If you fancy that you might just be as bad as I was, this preliminary process may be helpful for you. If you think that you aren’t as bad as me (few are, honestly few are), you can skip to the next step.  Two weeks before I cut sugar out of my tea for good, I began cutting back. Instead of adding a solid cup to each pitcher, I began adding 1/4 cup of sugar. When I got my own tea in restaurants, I gave myself half sweet and half unsweet.

This preliminary process helped prepare my taste buds for what was to come. I had never done this in the past and I honestly think it was the main reason I was able to be successful this time.

Recruit SUPPORT

Tell your family what you’re trying to do. Let them know the dangers that sugar poses to your health and happiness (see list above). Ask for their support and help. They’ll be there for you.  Heckity heck, if you share the list above with them (which you should), they will probably join you in your anti-sugar crusade. For your sake, I hope so, it’s simply easier when you have a mini army around you.

However, if you are going it alone – it simply means you’re going to have to be a super hero and I believe you’d look FAB in a cape.

Get CREATIVE

As we’ve established, I was the Queen of Sweet Tea and I reigned for decades. So, if I found things that worked for me, I’m certain they will work for others.

  • For some reason, making your tea a little stronger than usual helps you step away from the sugar. I’m finding myself falling head over heels in love with unsweetened strong black tea. It has a indescribable flavor that I find myself craving.
  • Fruit. Fruit. Fruit. Fruit has a natural sweetness, along with crazy delicious flavor. Sometimes I make up a pitcher of raspberry tea and add a few frozen peach slices to my glass. The combo is a knock-out and I never even think about sugar. Another combo I’m crazy about is adding orange wedges or slices to raspberry, black, or green tea. It tastes delicious and smells like Christmas, how is that anything but excellent?
  • Adding frozen peaches to black iced tea or green tea is also fantastic.
  • Mixing tea bags together is also something I enjoy doing. A couple of Tazo Zen Green Tea bags and a few of their Wild Sweet Orange bags make great hot or iced tea.
  • Experiment with different flavored teas from online companies such as Adagio. Great tea has so much personality that you won’t miss sugar… trust me. Their “berry” teas are better than any sweetened drink I’ve ever had… and you know that’s saying something.
  • When in restaurants, ask for a lemon with your unsweet tea. It’s better than sneaking in a bag of frozen peaches. My husband frowns upon such things.
  • Honestly, frozen peaches, lemons, and orange wedges are the keys to success.

DO NOT GO BACK

Like all healthy habits, once you’ve created it, you can’t let your guard down.  Could drinking one glass of sweet tea undo weeks of progress sticking with unsweet tea. YES. Actually YES x 7 – the number of times it has happened to me. Write down the list of sugar’s nastiness above and refer to it when necessary. Quite frankly, it’ll take away your craving immediately.

Also, this is a good time to point out that you need to kiss all of those bottled teas good-bye. The amount of sugar in them is pretty nuts.

What About Artificial Sweeteners?

Most experts feel that these artificial sweeteners are EVEN more dangerous than sugar. If that doesn’t alarm you, go back and read the health dangers of sugar again, then say the words, “EVEN more dangerous…” It’s an eye-opener.

ENCOURAGEMENT

Here’s a word of encouragement: After giving sweet tea up recently (without any cheating), I accidentally (unmarked tea canister at Wendy’s tripped me up) took a sip of sweet tea. Instead of thinking, “Oh Sweet Heavens, this is where I’m meant to be…” I literally thought, “Ugh – liquid sugar. I can’t even taste the tea!!”

After I picked myself up off the ground, I realized that my taste buds had been kind of retrained. They’d found that tea, in and of itself, is a delicious drink. It has plenty of fresh, pure flavor to stand on its own.

I poured out my “liquid sugar” and ice and started fresh with honest to goodness tea and thought “… this IS where I’m meant to be.”

How Green Tea Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

December 29, 2015 by Joi Leave a Comment

Matcha Tea

Matcha Green Tea

In addition to being a “crazy tea chick” and food blogger, I also write for several other websites I have covering subjects that I’m passionate about. These passions range from cats to Kentucky, from dream analysis to the Golden Age of Hollywood, and from self help to mental fitness. For each subject I “cover,” needless to say, I do a great deal of research and fact-finding.

While working on an article about Foods that Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, two of my world collided when I read that green tea is actually wonderful for brain health.

Rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease (Alzheimer’s is actually a form of dementia) are, tragically, on the rise. Millions of Americans (about 1 in 8 seniors) suffer from Alzheimer’s and it’s the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Until a cure for Alzheimer’s is discovered (and let’s all pray that this will happen in our lifetime), experts have given us many steps we can take to ward off (or at least delay) the chance of developing the disease.  One of the easiest ways we can put the odds in our favor is to eat the foods that have been proven to benefit our brains (see Brain Food).

An easy way to remember which foods are healthy for your brain is to simply ask yourself which foods are healthy for your heart. The same types of food can be found on both lists.

Green tea is a perfect example. We know it’s healthy for our bodies, but now research shows that it’s also great for our brains. Researchers from the University of Michigan have found that an element in green tea helps stop plaque growth in the brain that’s connected to Alzheimer’s disease.

Whether you drink your green tea iced or hot, know that each cup is great for you – body, mind, and soul.

White Tea and Wrinkle Prevention

August 13, 2014 by Joi Leave a Comment

The Tao of Tea White Tea
We all know that tea is magical. A tall glass of iced tea or a piping hot mug of tea can transform even the most ordinary day into an extra special day.  Not only is it delicious, it’s healthy.  For those who love White Tea, new research suggests that it may be as good for the way you look as it is for the way you feel.

According to a recent lab study, extracts in white tea exert an anti-inflammatory effect that slows the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers — those super-supportive intracellular structures that skin needs to stay firm and wrinkle-free.

While more studies are required, White Tea is believed to be a valuable weapon in the war against aging.  What’s more, White tea may have special fat-fighting powers!

While they’re still coming up with all the proof they need in the labs, common sense says that – in addition to avoiding sun during the middle hours of the day, using sunscreen, eating healthy, and not smoking – drinking more tea isn’t just a healthy idea.. it’s a beautiful one.

Shana Skinny Tea (Review)

October 2, 2013 by Joi Leave a Comment

 Shana Skinny Tea Healthy Blend

One of the sweetest perks of having a tea blog is the opportunity to do tea reviews. I’ve enjoyed some of the most incredible cups of tea in the world thanks to loose leaf tea, bottled tea, and tea bags that have been sent from crazy cool people.  When you send a tea fanatic tea, you automatically classify as “crazy cool.”

The most recent tea I was sent to review was from Shana Skinny Tea. Ironically, I had not heard of Shana before, so I was even more anxious to try one of their blends. I chose the Healthy Tea blend and one taste told me I was a genius for having done so.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Shana Skinny Tea Healthy Blend

About Shana Skinny Tea

Shana Skinny Tea boasts the most antioxidant-rich ingredients imaginable.  When you read their ingredients, you feel like you could be just as easily reading a list of food recommendations from Dr. Oz.  Drinking two cups of Shana Skinny Tea daily can help you achieve the following health and fitness goals.

  • Increase energy
  • Burn fat
  • Suppress your appetite
  • Reduce cravings
  • Assist in the digestion of food
  • Improve the quality of your sleep

  • Help you reach your ideal weight and health goals!

The list is from Shana Skinny Tea’s website, which would be an excellent place to learn more about their healthy teas.

(Review continued beneath the picture)

Shana Skinny Tea

Shana Skinny Healthy Tea Review

I knew I was in for something extra special as soon as I opened the box and pulled out my bag of Healthy Tea.  You could see the beautiful quality of the tea leaves through the clear bag and could smell them the instant you opened the bag. Quality tea can actually be enjoyed and appreciated long before its even brewed and that’s certainly the case with this excellent tea.

I used my beloved Libre Loose Leaf Tea Glass and immediately brewed some of the “Healthy Tea.”  I drank my first beautiful (seriously, it’s a gorgeous color) cup of Healthy Tea hot and it was exceptional.  As you know if you read many of my tea reviews or tea blog posts, I’m partial to sweetening my tea – whether it’s with sugar, fruit, or honey.  What can I say, I’ve got a head full of sweet teeth – PLUS I’m from the South, sweet tea’s a way of life here.  Anyway, if I say that a tea is perfectly delicious without sweetening of any kind, you can rest assured the tea is other-worldly.

This tea is JUST that. It’s unspeakably tasty and I hope you’ll try it asap, if not sooner.

Shana Skinny Tea (Healthy Tea) is also amazingly delicious on ice – and, again, it doesn’t need any sweetener… even by me.

Lower Your Cholesterol, Naturally, with Green Tea

March 5, 2013 by Joi Leave a Comment

Inspiring Green Tea
Everyday Health recently published a great slideshow showing ways to Lower Your Cholesterol in Five Minutes or Less. Click the link to see all the potentially life-saving tips.

One of these tips was of great interest to those of us who love tea.

From Everyday Health:

Research reviewing 20 studies, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, found that sipping green tea reduces LDL by an average of 5.30 mg/dL, though the amount of green tea sipped varied widely from one study to the next. The secret ingredient in green tea to help lower your cholesterol? Antioxidants called catechins. One cup has between 50 and 100 mg of catechins. Get out your mug — across the studies, participants had between 3 and 10 cups a day.

You’ll definitely want to see the rest of the tips. Interestingly enough, there are many everyday things we can do that’ll help keep our cholesterol levels in a healthy range. Things that don’t involve medication… most of us are all for that! See Lower Your Cholesterol in Five Minutes or Less for more information.

Live Longer by Drinking Green Tea and Black Tea

February 20, 2013 by Joi Leave a Comment

Live longer by drinking tea.

I do a great deal of reading about nutrition, heart health, mental health, and living longer (and better!).  While I do a great deal of research on these subjects for my self help blog and mental fitness blog, the main reason I do so much “healthy reading” is to keep my loved ones, and myself, as healthy as possible.

This morning, I read a great article on Prevention.com called “How Long Will I Live: Surprising Signs You’ll Live to Be 100?”  The gist of the article was for the reader to learn what things he/she was doing right and what things they might want to consider doing. If, that is, they want to live as long and as healthy as possible.

As I was reading along, I’d think things like, “Good, I do that…” or “Ooops, I’m dropping the ball there.”  When I came to the tip below, I thought, “I’m all over this one!”

Surprising Signs You’ll Live to be 100: You’re a Tea Lover

Both green and black teas contain a concentrated dose of catechins, substances that help blood vessels relax and protect your heart. In a study of more than 40,500 Japanese men and women, those who drank 5 or more cups of green tea every day had the lowest risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. Other studies involving black tea showed similar results.

You really need only 1 or 2 cups of tea daily to start doing your heart some good—just make sure it’s a fresh brew. Ready-to-drink teas (the kind you find in the supermarket beverage section) don’t offer the same health benefits. “Once water is added to tea leaves, their catechins degrade within a few days,” says Jeffrey Blumberg, PhD, a professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University. Also, some studies show that adding milk may eliminate tea’s protective effects on the cardiovascular system, so stick to just lemon or honey.

I’ve always loved tea and tend to drink, not only my own share, but a family of eight’s share as well.  I started drinking EVEN more tea when I reluctantly kicked my diet soft drink habit a short while back. Giving up drinks that were filled with things that were BAD for me and replacing them with drinks filled with things that were GREAT for me was one of the smartest things I ever did.

If you’re trying to give up soft drinks or diet soft drinks, stick with it.  It’s tough, I know that as well as anyone.  However, tea is a fantastic replacement. It’s delicious, healthy, refreshing, and has no downside.   I found that, for some reason, while trying to kick the soft drink habit, it helped if my black tea was extra strong. You may also find that adding lemon and/or honey will make it even more enjoyable as well.
